Bench — rock band from Rome, 2002-2007: demos, lyrics, mp3s, photos and the graphic adventure The Quest for Fame Bench

Five friends, three self-produced demos, a point-and-click adventure and a website full of nonsense. It's all still here.

Welcome to the official web site of Bench! Here it is possible to read the latest news of our band, and the particulars of the members, to download mp3 and read lyrics, to download our funny photos, or download our graphic adventure.

The original site went online in February 2005 and stayed up until the bench.it domain was closed. This is the very same thing, rebuilt: same words, same images, same files.

Bench on the bench — 2003

The Bench project was born in 2002 after the joining of two previous band Walhalla ( where Leonardo Luciani and Lantini brothers had a hand in ) and Isteria ( where Marco Iecher and Gabriele Alegria played) . At once the new band found its own direction and identity through the accomplishment of own productions, which you can find in the section “Discography”.

Below informations about members of the band are related. Click on the photos in order to see our particulars.

Discography

Three demos, seventeen songs

Everything plays right here. Every track can also be downloaded, and almost all of them come with lyrics and credits for who played what.

2003

Bench

Released in March 2003, this is our first demo! Little more than a year after the band came together, this first effort reflects the heterogeneity typical of Bench's early repertoire. It ranges from the light-heartedness of the hit "Cecily" to the romanticism of "Fool for you" and "Bound in Me", from the measured "I'm safe" to the reflective, melancholy "Off the wall". The recordings were made at the Benchwarmers' studio, in operation for the first time, except for the drums, which were done at the Elefante Bianco. The mixing was handled personally by Bench. The record features a professional keyboard player, Sergio Orso, who for some obscure reason found himself entangled, out of friendship, in this production. As the celebrated critic V. Stigliano put it at the time: "Bench [...] from failure at the school desk to success at the market stall".

Thanks, as written at the time

Jingle Bench

A collection of three short jingles, made for a well-known satellite television channel (guess which, using the clues on this page!) to be used as background music for some advertisements. Although recorded at the Benchwarmers' studio as usual, apart from the drums which were done at the Gotico, this time Bench entrusted the mixing to Carlos Zarattini, sound engineer of the aforementioned (?) channel.

2nd Floor

This is our second project, released on 13 December 2004, after eight months (!) of work between recording and mixing. The drums were recorded at the Studio del Gotico and the rest of the instruments, vocals included, at the Benchwarmers' studio. The mixes were handled by Bench, as of course was the writing of music and lyrics. Compared with the previous demo ("Bench", 2003) this is a more elegant work, more intimate but equally engaging, in our humble judgement. We consider there to be an appreciable technical improvement on our earlier efforts, as well as a widening of the range of sounds employed, since it moves from distorted electric guitar to the far sweeter violin. In short, as the noted critic V. Stigliano puts it: "Bench [...] soon from the local market to the global market".

Thanks, as written at the time

Greetings and thanks to: the Luciani family for their constant support and understanding, Tiziana for the inspiration and the patience, Franco Gentili for the orchestral consultancy, Giulia, Valerio for the golf clubs, Ox for the crucial technical help, Francesca and family, mr. Pip, il Conte, Carlos, il Gotico, dad, mum, Mackis and everyone who is fond of us.

Benchwarmers software

Bench — The Quest for Fame

A freeware graphic adventure made in AGS by Mak & Lex. AGS was created by Chris Jones. The game uses the AllegroOGG plugin, created by Javier Gonzalez.

You can play it straight from this page, with nothing to install. Or you can still download our little game: the file is about 45 MB, and once installed it will gobble up 66.1 MB (69,357,524 bytes, to be precise) of your hard disk.
It is a game from 2006, and the requirements were those of the time: a Pentium 3 with Windows 98 should do as a minimum, though we recommended a P4 (or AMD equivalent) with Windows XP, since that is the setup we built it on.

In 2006 The Games Machine gave it 75% and put it on the April DVD, in the Talent Zone section. Today you can play it right here in your browser, with nothing to download: the AGS engine has been recompiled to WebAssembly. The original Windows installer is still available for anyone who prefers it.

The download is in Italian only. To play in another language, use the browser version.

The obligatory legal notes

The game is entirely freeware and may be freely distributed, provided it is not tampered with or faked! The software is provided "as is" and we accept no responsibility for any catastrophes that may follow from running it.

relaxing atmospheres!
terrifying enemies!
existential problems!
...and free drinks for everyone!
How to play

You play with the mouse! The interface is very simple. There are two commands, look (the pointer turns into a pair of eyes) and interact (the pointer turns into a hand). To switch between them just press the right mouse button. When you move the mouse over a «sensitive» object the pointer changes shape and, pressing the left button, you get the effect you want. With the eyes selected you get a description of the object (e.g.: «that's a very nice guitar»); with the hand selected you interact with it: if it is something you can pick up it will be picked up, if it can be opened it will be opened, if it is a person you will talk to them... and if there is nothing to be done you get a discouraging message (e.g.: «not a great idea»). To make it clear what you are pointing at, a bar at the bottom centre of the screen shows the name of the object under the pointer (e.g. «guitar»).

When you talk to a character, the lines you can say appear at the bottom of the screen. Pick the one that seems most appropriate by clicking it with the left button.

As you move the pointer around the screen it may turn into an arrow — over a door, for instance: click the left button in that state and you change location, moving to the room next door.

There is also a small map icon in the bottom left corner: click it and a map of the available locations appears, so you can travel straight to the one you want.

In the bottom right corner there are two icons. One is a backpack — the inventory, everything you have collected. The other is a floppy disk, for saving the game, loading a save or quitting back to Windows.

As for the inventory: select the backpack and a panel appears with everything you have picked up. You can look at the items (using the eyes) or take one in hand (clicking it with the arrow). Once an item is in hand the pointer takes its shape. At that point you can leave the inventory with the OK button and use the item wherever you see fit (e.g. use the key on the door). To turn the pointer back into eyes or hand, just press the right button. You can also combine inventory items with each other (e.g. put the battery in the remote control).

If all this sounds complicated (don't worry, it's easy!) there is a tutorial in the main menu where you can practise with the controls.

A few tips

Ours is a graphic adventure where you can never die and never get stuck. So if you don't know what to do, it is entirely and exclusively your own fault! :)
Look around, talk to the characters, hunt for objects, pick them up and try them on everything! An experienced player should finish the game in two or three hours — we think we made the puzzles fairly easy....

But if you really cannot get any further, you can always consult the walkthrough!

Academic qualifications

We hereby inform the gentle public that this day our valiant vocalist Fabrizio has obtained his much-coveted degree! All interested parties are invited to congratulate him since, in the euphoria of the moment, he may well hand out invitations to lavish banquets. Congratulations Fabbrì!

In the photograph one may appreciate the astonishment mixed with disbelief on Our Man's face at the moment of proclamation.

"Ooooh!"

Bench - The Quest for Fame reviewed and given away by TGM!

We hereby inform the gentle visitors of this site that the most celebrated magazine The Games Machine, in its April issue, carries a review of our game on page 136 and moreover includes it in the "Talent Zone" section on side B of its DVD!

While thanking the TGM staff who agreed to publish it, we greet those visitors who have landed on our site after reading the address in the magazine.

For anyone stuck on some treacherous puzzle (come now, it's all easy!!) and looking for the walkthrough, it is at the bottom of the "the game" page, reachable from the link above, or by clicking here.

(ps. the cover here on the right with the word "Bench" on it is obviously a complete fake! Please don't sue us! :)

** Off-topic update, 3 April: your favourite (?) bass player and webmaster has just graduated in law, and goes officially from "student" to "unemployed"! Hurrah, hurrah! :)

Wow! We're on TGM online!

Friends of Bench, we are delighted to tell you that our recent little game has been reviewed on the celebrated site of The Games Machine, TGM Online, at www.tgmonline.it/talentzone! Our cheerful little adventure landed a resounding 75%: a flattering score, especially considering that none of us is a programmer! :)

We greet and thank Gianluca Masina, author of the article and a contributor not only to TGM but also to the site Game Programming Italia. (www.gameprog.it).

Bench: the videogame!!!

Given the scarcity of site updates of late, some may have wondered what became of us. Well, we were shut in the proverbial lone programmer's garage, labouring briskly on a top-secret project: Bench - the quest for fame, our graphic adventure for PC, is now finally available to download!

It is a cheerful little game in which you are required to complete a dangerous mission concerning us of Bench! It is not an action game, being as it is a graphic adventure: you must interact with the characters, wander the rooms, collect objects, solve puzzles and carry through fiendishly complicated reasoning worthy of a Nobel Prize!

We invite anyone interested to download it from the relevant page, reachable from the menu above or by clicking here.

Naturally, while you play, you will be treated to our songs in instrumental versions... we are a band, after all!

Bench - the quest for fame!!!

Happy birthday, Fabbrì!

As today marks the twenty-seventh anniversary of the birth of our indestructible singer, Benchwarmers' Productions Ltd has unanimously resolved to use this site to wish Mr Fabrizio a happy birthday: many happy returns, Fabbrì!

We further announce that Bench, though musically at a standstill for the moment owing to work and study commitments, will shortly complete a currently top-secret multimedia project which will be available, barring mishaps, to download from this site in about a month. More information soon. Heh heh heh heh.

Direction change

Luciani/Lantini · 2nd Floor

A spot of sunshine makes me wake up
but still my feet ain't checked the ground
they don't want to search for the street
hate that noisy symphony
stop me walkin' they talk about me
a trafic-light comes, set me free
about... about me they talk
don't know what's wrong, or what to say

sometimes I miss you much, before you get away
sometimes I'd cry so loud, and it's ok

Direction changed
wind pickin' up your name
onto the floors and round the corner
like a whisper came
and let me say
I'm just your own, like
the way I told you right one day
Direction changed
your smile to shake my brain
an huge vibration through my heart
but I know you can't stay
and it's ok
(it) takes (you) a while to make me shiny
and let me hope you'll come again

A spot of sunshine made me wake up
you know, my feet hadn't checked the ground
felt so sorry they hated the street
felt so sorry they talked ‘bout me
but that's the way I miss you much
it may be hard, but it's ok

Direction changed
wind pickin' up your name
onto the floors and round the corner
like a whisper came
and let me say
I'm just your own, like
the way I told you right one day
Direction changed
your smile to shake my brain
an huge vibration through my heart
but I know you can't stay
and it's ok
(it) takes (you) a while to make me shiny
and let me hope you'll come again

Just for you this song
you let me feel, me
just ‘bout me this song
to tell you that I love you so much!

Forever I'll wonder

Luciani/Lantini · 2nd Floor

There's always six-strings at my back
Many miles of fears fill my suitcase, as I lay
Some lovin' wasted, some die in vain,
Some never grown.

There's always crossroads at my back
Many miles behind the heavy sunset, isn't real?
My memories slip down amongst the hills
And fade away.

Slip down away through me...

Take me away for a long long ride
Seek for many clouds
Gonna reach them all, pass them all.
Wanna drive away
Other places, other scenes to play... ...to face

Slip down away through me, I said, through this, I mean
Still got my faith.

An' I feel like I'm not surrendering
Gonna suffer for these days I spend on searching me.

And
Forever I'll wonder... forever I'll wonder...

Superfeeling

Lantini · 2nd Floor

It's only a feeling
This is what they say,
It happens to everyone,
It's goin' to pass.
Outside the pourin' rain... ...it's cold...

It's only a feeling
Yes babe, this is what they say,
It's very simple
Like prayin',
Today it's tough... ...but...

It's a feeling, feeling, super feeling!
Yes she feeds
My feeling;
I can't explain
‘Cause it's a flame

It's only a bleeding
This is what they say,
It happens to everyone,
It leaves a scar
Today it's pain... ...tomorrow a sign...

It's a feeling, feeling, super feeling!
Yes she feeds
My feeling;
I can't explain
‘Cause it's a flame

Two broken hearts can make it better and
Turn into laugh.

Uh, I, I...
close coming I,
through the wind I've held before,
leave you now, calling now

Weariness beneath your breathe,
still the same,
leaving now, calling now
now, now, now...

Uh, I, I...
No, please,
goodbye,
won't you stay with me for a while,
while, while ,while...
so fine, so fine
make whispers shine

Cursed

Allegria/Iecher · 2nd Floor

Walking down the street
with my girlfriend by my side
I was tasting all the colors
of a blissful summer Sunday morning

sun was shining high
birds were singin' on the trees
grass in fields has never been so green
and the day was just perfect to me

suddenly from far
unexpected like a punch
two legs long more than a highway
were approaching just in front of me

my eyes run along
a few meters on the lane
but your sight intercepted mine
it's time to pay the fine

I know eyes were made to see
but the only one you can watch is just me
'cause I'm the only sun into your sky
you'd better not forget 'til you're alive

but even if my hands are shaking
even if my heart is breaking
you will never notice me
'couse you're just an insensitive

and now I'm cursed by your words
my damned soul is gonna burn
and I'm just cursed and now I see
salvation's far away from me

a few days ago
in the garden of her best friend
wearing his blue suit and red cape
Superman is softly landed

full of love for her
he brought dozens of red roses
tons of chocolates and presents
always ready to realize her wishes

I've never been like him
all my merits disappear
and you're sick of me anyway
no matter what I say

seen how a real man can be?
he'll live and die for her exclusively
because of him, I know, she'll never cry
you'd better not forget 'til you're alive

but even if my hands are shaking
even if my heart is breaking
you will never notice me
'couse you're just an insensitive

and now I'm cursed by your words
my damned soul is gonna burn
and I'm just cursed and now I see
salvation's far away from me

and even if you say I'm not
enough for you and always wrong
we're still together to go on...

and now I'm cursed by your words
my damned soul is gonna burn
and I'm just cursed and now I see
salvation's far away from me

Tonight

Luciani · 2nd Floor

And it came, finally

the day I was not afraid any more
the day my life was driftin' easily

the day my thoughts were free, me, free,
free from my thoughts
the day to come along without wondering
the day to float among love

inside your arms
and it came, finally

the day to cry aloud
the day to find an answer to everything
to say everything we wanted to say
it came the day to be
and it came finally
it came the day to be

just you and
you and me
you and me
and all the others
you and me and all the others
to be, together free
and it came it came it came, this day this day

So please, please let me, let me stay
let me stay with you, tonight
please, tonight...

Good night ladies (Ophelia's madness)

Lantini · 2nd Floor

Good night ladies, good night sweet ladies,
Good night, good night.
Laertes will know, now I have to leave.
Where is my cab?
Thanks you advised me.

Is he goin' to come back?
Is he goin' to come back again?
White was the beard like snow on his face...

In vain we cry!
My king,
We know what we are, not what we will.
Good night,
Ladies good night.

Yesterday rained.
She whispers his name an'
Falls an' floats away.
Black hair through the waves...
Good night ladies.
Good night again.

Mr. B-shop

Luciani/Lantini · 2nd Floor

Have you seen Mr. B-shop
Walkin' all alone
On his face I find the evidence of what he's done
He's gone

Used to store and sell almost the everything.
From a broken condom package to that fake diamond ring

Yes, but Mr. B-shop is gonna pay for what he's done to me.

I went to Mr. B-shop's cause I was in need
of the cheapest special present for the woman of my dreams.
On his counter a damage case (cool! flavour of lime!)
Nine months later I had to buy that stolen glassy ring (nice-price!)
Yes, but Mr. B-shop has got to pay for what he's done...

Try to catch his plane
But it's leaving by
Leaving me by
Flown away
Far away
And I never gonna catch him
Laughing in the sun
Sunbathing on the sand
And I am obviously here to say
There's no one left to blame

No one else to blame
Than me

Bishop's drinking his
Piña Colada

But Mr. B-shop will never pay for what he's done...

Try to catch his plane
But it's leaving by
Leaving me by
Flown away
Far away
And I never gonna catch him
Laughing in the sun
Sunbathing on the sand
And I am obviously here to say
There's no one left to blame
Leaving by
Leaving you by
Flown away
Far away
And you'll never gonna catch him
Laughing in the sun

But I'm tired of claiming,
let's go home
and leave him by

Thanks

Just gonna pray for all the others
just gonna pray for life
ain't gonna be the same gonna be the same,
the same
just been a pray to be another
just been a silence through the night
ain't gonna be the same
ain't gonna be the same gonna be the same,
the same

( while the world is different, starts to rain )

Just been your eyes lookin' in a whisper
just been your mind searchin' for a quiet
just been a wait for me, wait for me, wait for,
wait

( just collect my arms and drive away
while the world is different, starts to rain )

Just been my pillow
telling me stories about a little shiny woman
spreading her heart out, for anyone
who was able to understand it

Thank you, thank you, thank you
(just collect my arms and drive away
while the world is different, starts to rain
while the world is different ,starts to fade...)

Thanks

Just thanks

Cecily

Lantini/Luciani/Lantini · Bench

Cecily
I’m comin’ back to you
It’s been a long long time
Since I called you little “chilly-mini-greeny” for the last time
Do you miss me too?
Like I always do… …
Far away
I was lonely but today
We gonna meet and our sun will shine again
I’ll be glad to care of you
Till you’re pleased
Can stay with me.

Your dewy tears shed in the morning
Your sweet scent spread and everything gonna be
Better than this wicked world could be

Your smile springs up like a flower
And makes me wanna fly higher than bird
Tell me that you want to live this dream… …with me!!

Cecily
I’m sittin’ here by you
I’m watchin’ your “green eyes”
It was very tough holdin’ on without you always by my side
Are you happy too?
Don’t be so cruel… …
Far away
I was lonely but today
We’ll reach the stars and our sun will shine again
I’ll be glad to care of you
Till you’re pleased
… …I clean your leaves… …

-RIT-

Don’t ask me why I fear
‘Bout livin’ without you by my side
Don’t tell me that your life
Won’t be as long as mine…

I'm safe

Luciani · Bench

Oh, been growin'on strong
And tough and now I'm a man.

Oh, been thinkin' about
All those people I don't care.

Oh, been walkin' around
My feet feel upset.

‘Cause this time is just movin' along
and tonight I won't be there.

Oh, I'm just dancin' alone
‘cause my brain
is not more a miracle
nothing more than a rainbow set by night.

RIT: Oh, but I'm safe you see
There's no reason to be in any worry my dear
And if there's a way to think and talk reasonable
I don't know it by now, I just want you my damn
To be there when I need your hands getting' close,
To be there when I fear ‘bout things that have gone,
To be there when I breathe… …

SPEC: (got an) Heaven to take
Heaven to wake,
Heaven to taste,
Heaven to waste,
Heaven to dream about from my garden roof;
Heaven to spy,
Heaven to dye,
Heaven to find out of my mind,
Heaven to make my inner sense survive… …

Still
‘Cause my brain
is not more invincible
up the stairs with three glasses in my hand.

RIT: Oh, but I'm safe you see
There's no reason to be in any worry my dear
And if there's a way to live comfortable
I don't know it by now, I just want you my dawn
To be there when I need your lips getting' close,
To be there when I fear ‘bout things that may come,
To be there when I breathe
To be here in my dreams
To be here… …

Fool for you

Lantini · Bench

Every smile every move
Every breath that you give
Every song that you sing
Every kind of your different dream.
Every food that you eat… …not the meat!!!
I'm a fool for you.

Every game that you play
Every mad joke that you say.
Don't you sleep when we leave?
And I drive.
Everything that you see every Tuesday on TV!!!
I'm a fool for you.

Yes, it's true I can't refuse
That I'm a fool for you.

It's a bliss,
When we wake up in the morning,
Your first kiss.
When you dance in your room by the moon
You're so cool.
Your little feet… …so sweet!!!
Baby I'm a fool for you.

Yes, it's true I can't refuse
That I'm a fool for you.
I'm a fool for you.

Bound in me

Lantini · Bench

The mind is still
The soul is tired…drops by drops
My love spreads into the sea of delusion.
I'm bound in me,
My heart is in trouble…it's you I want to blame,
But's late to live the hate inside.

The anger is useless,
But it comes when it's a mess;
It's hard believe in you when there's nothing but survival.
How can you spit on my face
I was with you when you were afraid,
I close my eyes
Just walk away!

I pray at night,
But hope is not the mine own,
Now I trust in what I see!
Am I blind?
You brush your smile, your book of love-rhymes:
It's easier to pretend than face the truth of a crime.

The anger is useless,
But it comes when it's a mess;
It's hard believe in you when there's nothing but survival.
How can you spit on my face
I was with you when you where afraid,
I close my eyes
Just walk away!

Off the wall

Allegria · Bench

Off the wall
Che buon sapore di libertà
Off the wall
Se guardo bene mi vedo già lassù
A cavalcare un'onda, andare giù
Volando via di qua
Perché lì tutto si può
E c'è il paradiso Off the wall

Off the wall
Quante giornate passate là
Off the wall
Sogni e parole dispersi ormai
Tra le nebbie di un amore
E le parole in bianco e nero
Quell'onda è già più lontana
E non so se ci andrò
Off the wall

E intanto il tempo passa
E porta via la rabbia e la fantasia
E trasforma i nostri sogni
In ricordi amari che sfrecciano via
Off the wall,
Non sento più il mare
Il vento salire
E cerco di trovare il paradiso

Al di là dell'ombra che c'è in me
Vedo tanta strada fatta
Ho già un motivo per sorridere
Il sole è già lassù

Off the wall
Davanti a me c'è libertà
Off the wall
Questo viaggio non finirà

E intanto il tempo passa
E porta via la rabbia e la fantasia
E trasforma i nostri sogni
In ricordi amari che sfrecciano via
Off the wall,
Non sento più il mare
Il vento salire
E cerco di trovare il paradiso

Pensaci

Coviello · Benchwarmers' productions

Io militare, tu quasi sposata
Eppure al primo incontro la nostra storia è cominciata
Senza troppi sentimenti, senza troppe inibizioni
Solo con la voglia di dar sfogo alle emozioni

Ripenso a quei momenti passati insieme

Sei proprio come me sai, proprio come ero io
Le stesse paranoie, le domande poste a Dio
E ora che ti perdo non mi sembra vero
Non si può comprar l’amore ma si può pagarlo caro

Un castello di sabbia è come il nostro amore
Che quando tira vento cade come neve al sole
Pretendevi da me affetto e comprensione

Sei proprio come me sai, proprio come ero io

Sei proprio come me sai, proprio come ero io
Le stesse paranoie, le domande poste a Dio
E ora che ti perdo non mi sembra vero
Non si può comprar l’amore ma si può pagarlo caro
